I accepted the challenge on Tuesday (details here). For my third and final quote, I chose one from my favorite play:
“What a piece of work is a man!
How noble in reason! how infinite in faculty!
in form, in moving, how express and admirable!
in action how like an angel!
in apprehension how like a god!
the beauty of the world!
the paragon of animals!
And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?
man delights not me; no, nor woman neither, though, by your smiling, you seem to say so.”
William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” Act II, Scene II
This is not my favorite quote, but in my present jaded and frustrated state of mind (the world is a cruel and violent place sometimes), this works and makes me feel slightly better.
I know that Hamlet is fictional and Shakespeare may also be, but the ideas and feelings, the visceral response to life is tangible and on paper. Therefore it cannot be dismissed no matter how long ago it was written. As the wise man once said, “there is nothing new under the sun.”
