The Velveteen Rabbit

The Velveteen Rabbit has always been a favorite of mine. I decided to re-read it tonight and was not at all disappointed! Let me tell you one thing, “Toy Story” ain’t got NUTHIN’ on this classic tale!

When I was little, my parents gave me a stuffed dog that I think used to belong to my mom. I christened him Sparky. He was white and rust colored, spotted, with floppy ears, four legs, a tail, and two dark brown eyes.

Like the Rabbit, Sparky soon became quite bedraggled, patchy, and eventually, he lost his tail, an ear, and one of his eyes. He remained the most beautiful and confidential thing in my life. I told him all of my secrets until I was a teenager when I was finally forced to let him rest.

My mother is wonderful about saving childhood mementos, this one is no different. I recently found this book in a random stack and was instantly taken back to Sparky and evenings sitting in her lap while she read this to me.

If you’re in your thirties, too, then you’ll recognize this version, published in 1981.

  1. Childhood memories are the most pristine ones. Nice write-up 🙂

Thank you. I’d almost forgotten about Sparky, and am ashamed about that!
